Heatsource Monthly Review - April 2009

April was a very productive month, with lots of quotes…

Commercial Projects

On the commercial side, our ‘Big 6’ energy company project was signed off. The project on the east coast is still ongoing, to be completed at the end of May.

Domestic Projects

We undertook four CP12 gas reports in Walton on Thames, and at the end of the month we completed another Viessmann system installation in Maidenhead, installing another WB2B natural gas Viessmann Vitodens 200, hot water cylinder, and water softener. There were lots of other domestic projects, such as our ongoing contract in Twickenham requiring a replacement Viessmann boiler installation, and other plumbing works.

Other News

Heatsource had a meeting with the Carbon Trust with a view to using their schemes in our upcoming projects.

Budget 2009 News…

The 2009 Budget was announced today, with a new legally-binding UK carbon budget, which makes interesting reading for the renewable energy sector.

The points raised were:

Britain commits to cut carbon emissions by 34% by 2020

This will keep the UK on track for its long term goal of cutting emissions by 80% by 2050.

An extra £1.4bn to help combat climate change by supporting low-carbon industries

This includes £525m for offshore wind projects over the next two years

£445m support for energy efficiency schemes for homes, firms and public buildings

£375 million has been promised over the next two years to promote energy efficiency in households, businesses and public buildings. This carries on from the one million homes insulated last year. £70 million will also be spent on small-scale and community low carbon efficiency.

£405m to encourage low-carbon energy and advanced green manufacturing

£405 million will be spent on the development of a world leading low carbon energy and green manufacturing sector in the UK.

Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) to be introduced

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be introduced in the move towards a low-carbon energy supply. New projects will demonstrate the capture and storage of carbon dioxide, rather than its release into the atmosphere.

Increase in fuel duty

Car scrapping scheme to be introduced

What Does This Mean For Me?

Domestically, it means there will be more money to support public buildings and households in become ‘greener’. It is claimed the Government aim to slash energy bills by around £60 million each year.

Commercially, it means more technologies will become readily available, and products will be manufactured in a more ‘greener’ way.

Commercial Projects

On the commercial side, our project for one of the ‘Big 6’ energy companies commenced and was completed this month, with the installation of a CHP unit and ancillaries. The project at the printers in Chertsey was also completed and looks fantastic. The project on the east coast is still ongoing, and should be finsished mid-April.

Domestic Projects

Heatsource were very busy on the domestic side this month, undertaking a system pipework overhaul in Richmond and serving three CP12 gas reports in Walton on Thames. Towards the end of the month we completed a Viessmann system renewal in Maidenhead, installing a WB2B natural gas Viessmann Vitodens 200 and 160 litre hot water cylinder.

A local project at a printers in Chertsey got underway this month and is still ongoing, consisting of the installation of the strip-out of existing heating plant and the installation of a Vitodens 200-W (60kW), including all controls and other ancillaries in the Office Suite, and the installation of a 30kW water heater and controls in the Top Floor Flat. Look back in the Case Studies section in the next month or so for further details…

It has been a while since our last blog, but we didn’t want to keep repeating over and over again the same news regarding the fast escalating cost of fuels and energy bills, but coming to the end of the year, we feel we need to share this information since we were all expecting a drop in the energy bills before the end of the year, but unfortunately, this is not the case.

The following articles explains how the ‘big six’ power giants will bot be forced to pass on a 40% fall in wholesale gas prices before the end of the winter until, in some cases, April or May, according to Industry regulator, Ofgem.
