How do I know if my property is ready for renewable energy technology?

Most properties can benefit from some form or renewable energy. The main points that have to be considered are how to integrate and the location of the various technologies available.

How many technologies are there available for domestic properties?

At the current moment there is a range of products available, known as micro generation, which consist of various solar products, biofuel technologies and wind.

Also to be considered is low carbon technologies, which should not be confused with renewal energy.

How do I know what is the right technology for my property?

Most renewable and low carbon technologies would suit most properties although the following must be considered:

  • Budget
  • Building design
  • Space

What is the payback period of the investment?

This is a question often asked and needs to be answered sensibly: escalating fuel costs will always be the main factors to be considered and it is the main driver to reduce your payback period. A recent article states “consumers face up to 40% rise in energy bills”.

Solar Thermal: Doing the sums properly solar thermal systems offer a payback between 4 and 12 years, depending on the fossil fuel displaced, the future inflation factor, and the amount of hot water you use.

Are there any grants available? How do I know if I am eligible and how can I apply to them?

There are various grants and funding available. It is best to check with your local authorities.The main governmental grant available is the Low Carbon Building Programme

Can I run the electricity and heat of my property just with renewable energy?

This is possible but major alterations would have to be made to appliances and lighting to be run just from renewable sources.

How long does it takes to install it in my property?

Depending on size of the property and complexity of the technology, on avarage an installation takes around 8 to 12 days.

Will I jeopardise the look of my house after installing renewable energy in my property

Most renewable energies can be incorporated in the building design of the property, but when it comes to retro installations certain technologies may be in view.

Every provision would be made to ensure that the installation will be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing as possible. 

Can I realistically save money with renewable energy or is it just a trendy fashion

With the change of building regulations and the Government tightening their belt in relation to CO2 emissions it is expected that the Government will subsidise and support your financial outlay.

This together with escalating fuel costs, inflation, savings in boiler servicing and the ability to make a boiler last longer makes a reality the fact that you can save money.

To what extent you really reduce your CO2 footprint with the renewable energy installed in your property?
