Windfall Tax: New Threat of Energy Bills Going Up
Friday, August 29, 2008Despite the fact that half of Britain’s energy companies have already raised their bills twice this year and the remainder are set to follow suit before the Autumn (taking average household bills just shy of £1,500 a year), consumers might have to take on the chin another rise if the Government goes ahead with windfall tax.
This is a fascinating article where the big six energy retailers explain their position through David Porter, chief executive of the Association of Electricity Producers, who stated:
”if you take money out of the companies and they have find it somewhere else, then their investment costs will go up and costumers will have to bear the burnt of that. There has been no windfall. Many of the retail arm of power companies have struggled to make their money and have held down their prices to customers, while wholesale prices have soared”
The Government, internally divided, is debating to go or not ahead with the campaign. The Local Government Association has also thrown its weight behind the campaign, saying that a windfall tax would be the most effective way of funding a national home insulation programme.
The big six energy retailers - British Gas, npower, E.ON, Scottish-Power, Scottish & Southern and EDF Energy - are trying to ward off the threat of a windfall tax by offering to spend more money on schemes to reduce fuel poverty. Earlier this year they agreed to spend an additional £225 million over three years to reduce fuel poverty, a term used to describe households that spend more than 10% of their income on keeping warm.
How to fund insulation and micro-generation programmes is an open debate, but here at Heatsource Consultants we believe that this article shows, once again, that the only way forward is via the installation of renewable energy in your property to minimise the dependency on energy suppliers.
Hit us with a tax and the public will pay for it, energy chiefs say.

Record Rise For British Gas Bills
Thursday, July 31, 2008British Gas owner Centrica says it is raising gas prices by a record 35% and electricity prices by 9%. The UK’s biggest domestic energy supplier said that the price hikes would take place with immediate effect. It blamed “soaring wholesale energy prices”, but added that standard tariff prices would not rise again in 2008.

Solar Power From Saharan Sun Could Provide Europe’s Electricity, Says EU
Wednesday, July 23, 2008A tiny rectangle superimposed on the vast expanse of the Sahara captures the seductive appeal of the audacious plan to cut Europe’s carbon emissions by harnessing the fierce power of the desert sun.
Dwarfed by any of the north African nations, it represents an area slightly smaller than Wales but scientists claimed yesterday it could one day generate enough solar energy to supply all of Europe with clean electricity.

Forget the Credit Crunch, Oil is the Key to World Recovery
Sunday, June 29, 2008After the stock market’s worst half-year since the early 1990s, nobody - not even I - can deny any longer that financial assets around the world are in a severe bear market. But with so many of the world’s most important markets last week retesting their post-credit crunch extremes - the FTSE at 5,500, the S&P 500 at 1,280, oil at $140 and the euro at $1.60 - it seems worth asking the defiant Churchillian question: Is this the end of the beginning or the beginning of the end? Is the bear market only just starting and about to break down to much lower levels? Or is it possible that last week was a test of the lows hit by equities and the dollar in the credit crisis and the high hit by oil two weeks ago?

Consumers Face Up to 40% Rise in Energy Bills as Gas Prices Soar
Wednesday, June 18, 2008Consumers could be hit by energy price rises of up to 40 per cent this year as power companies struggle to maintain profitability in the face of a trebling in wholesale gas prices.
Leading market analysts said yesterday that an increase of that magnitude would drive average UK energy bills from £1,048 at present to £1,467 within seven months.

Heatsource Stay on the Ball..
Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Claire says:
Being the Administrator at Heatsource, I know we get a lot of catalogues, leaflets, and magazines showcasing the latest energy efficient products on the market and reports highlighting new ways of ‘green’ thinking. This, of course, is not unusual if you work in the construction sector, but as a consumer, I have noticed recently there has been a lot of information in newspapers, on the television, and on the internet pushing the green issue. We at Heatsource are all for this, and from our point of view, it is a good sign, whichever way portrayed. It means our customers are in receipt of a wealth of more readily-accessible information so have more knowledge when asking us for products, which in turn makes our job a lot easier! It also more importantly means that people are aware of all the issues affecting our planet, and people who want to make a change are informed of how to do so.
This has inspired us to create our own pool of knowledge, and bring to our customers’ attention items which we have spotted in the public domain, which in turn we hope will inform and inspire our customers…
